I’m a devout believer in the power of taking time off to renew and replenish the creative well I rely on every day to serve Donor Boom’s clients. Today, I’m wrapping up an extraordinary love fest with nature in Telluride and Crested Butte, Colorado.
And here’s something I’ve noticed: when I’m surrounded by natural beauty, my brain doesn’t shut down on vacation—it wakes up. Apparently, I’ve packed my nonprofit fundraising brain right alongside my hiking boots.

A Fantastic Idea For A Fundraising Event
I was so delighted to stumble upon this fantastic fundraising event taking place today, I had to share my experience!
A Unique Fundraising Event
The Crested Butte Rotary Club hosts an annual Duck Race to raise funds for its local initiatives including scholarships and grants to community nonprofits. Individuals, businesses and organizations pay $500 to sponsor decorated rubber ducks and race day tickets cost $10.
A snow plow—because of course, this is a ski town—dumps the whole flock into a local waterway, and then it’s off to the races. May the best bathtub duckie win!
I have a special fondness for fundraising events that are super imaginative and bring joy to all those involved. And this one tops my list.
Zoom in on the faces in the crowd. Pure joy! When was the last time a gala made anyone that giddy?
Fantastic Fundraising Event Results
Is this a six-figure fundraising event? Probably not. But joy is a magnet for new donors willing to donate $500. And it creates a beloved bond with your nonprofit that is priceless.
And here’s the thing: if you asked some of these supporters for a major gift down the line, I doubt they’d duck the opportunity. They’ve already taken the plunge.
